What Ipamorelin is
Ipamorelin is a synthetic peptide built from just five amino acids. It came from a series of compounds that drop the two central amino acids of GHRP-1, an earlier growth hormone releasing peptide.
It belongs to the growth hormone secretagogues, a family studied for the way they act on the ghrelin receptor (GHS-R1a) in the pituitary. Rather than supplying growth hormone, Ipamorelin prompts the pituitary to release its own.
The word selective is what sets it apart. In the 1998 work that introduced it, Ipamorelin released growth hormone about as strongly as the older peptide GHRP-6. Where GHRP-6 and GHRP-2 also pushed up ACTH and cortisol, the stress-hormone pair, Ipamorelin left both at the levels seen with GHRH itself, and prolactin did not move. That narrow response is the reason it is so often chosen as a research tool.
What the research covers
Published work on Ipamorelin follows a few clear threads:
- Growth hormone release. Pituitary cell and laboratory studies measured its growth hormone release against GHRP-6, found the two comparable, and showed that Ipamorelin works through the same receptor.
- Bone growth and mineral content. Laboratory studies reported faster longitudinal bone growth and higher bone mineral content.
- Muscle and bone under glucocorticoids. In one laboratory model, Ipamorelin counteracted the fall in muscle strength and bone formation that a glucocorticoid caused on its own.
- Gut motility. In a laboratory model of postoperative ileus, it shortened the time for gut transit to restart after surgery.
