How Long Does Tirzepatide Last? Storage and Mixing
Lyophilised tirzepatide keeps longest sealed, dry, dark and cold; once mixed with bacteriostatic water it lasts 8 to 12 weeks at 2 to 8 °C under Vistara Labs’ handling guidance, with quality slowly fading from around week 6 to 8. A mixed vial is not frozen and is kept out of the light. The approved pen product’s monograph allows its own formulated solution up to 21 days unrefrigerated at no more than 30 °C, but that allowance belongs to that formulation, not to a reconstituted research vial.
Findings
- Tirzepatide is a 39-amino-acid peptide carrying a C20 fatty diacid side chain that binds albumin (Sun et al., PNAS, 2022).
- The approved pen product’s monograph says refrigerate at 2 to 8 °C, never freeze, and keep in the carton to protect from light; single-dose pens and vials may spend up to 21 days in total at or below 30 °C.
- Its multi-dose formats are discarded 30 days after first use, a sterility limit for an opened, preserved container.
- A chemical supplier’s data sheet lists the dry powder as stable for 1 year at −20 °C and 2 years at −80 °C, sealed away from moisture and light.
How long does tirzepatide powder last?
As a freeze-dried cake, tirzepatide has almost no water to react with, which is why the powder is the stable form. One reagent supplier’s data sheet gives the powder 1 year at −20 °C and 2 years at −80 °C, with the instruction to keep it sealed and away from moisture and light (MedChemExpress, tirzepatide certificate of analysis). Unopened vials go in the fridge for near-term work or the freezer for longer storage, in their box. A cold vial is allowed to reach room temperature before the cap comes off so that condensation does not form on the powder. Both strengths, 10 mg and 20 mg, follow the same rules.
How long does tirzepatide last after mixing?
Mixed with bacteriostatic water and kept at 2 to 8 °C, tirzepatide falls in the general window in how long peptides last after mixing: 8 to 12 weeks, with quality beginning to fade around week 6 to 8. That is the store’s handling guidance, not a printed expiry date. The tirzepatide reconstitution page has the calculator for water volume and concentration.
Why the sequence matters
The main reactions that wear down a dissolved peptide are oxidation of methionine and cysteine and deamidation of asparagine and glutamine (Manning et al., Pharm Res, 2010). Tirzepatide’s published sequence contains no methionine, cysteine or asparagine. It does carry two glutamines and a tryptophan near its C-terminal end, and tryptophan is among the residues open to oxidation, including oxidation driven by light. That fits the monograph and the supplier data sheet, which both call for dark storage. The label also lists two non-standard aminoisobutyric acid residues, at positions 2 and 13.
How the 30-day label figure fits
The approved multi-dose formats are thrown away 30 days after first use, or after a total of 30 days at room temperature. Like the 28-day beyond-use date that USP General Chapter 797 sets for preserved multi-dose containers, that clock is built around sterility after repeated needle entry. The 8 to 12 week window answers a different question: how long the peptide holds up in a cold vial accessed only through a swabbed stopper. Laboratories that work to pharmacy conventions date the vial at first puncture and follow them.
How long does tirzepatide last at room temperature?
A mixed research vial belongs in the fridge, and time out of it is limited to handling. The 21-day room-temperature allowance on the approved single-dose pens and vials, at no more than 30 °C, shows that the formulated drug tolerates warmth for a few weeks, but it was established for that buffered, manufactured solution in its carton. Heat speeds every degradation pathway, and a vial that has sat warm for an unknown time is best treated as suspect.
Can tirzepatide be frozen?
The powder, yes: the supplier figures above are freezer figures. A mixed vial, no. The monograph is direct: do not freeze, and do not use if it has been frozen. Freezing and thawing aggregates peptides in solution. Laboratories that need longer storage freeze single-use aliquots once rather than refreezing a working vial.
How can you tell mixed tirzepatide has degraded?
- Haze that does not clear after the first 10 to 15 minutes, or cloudiness that appears later.
- Particles, strands or flakes, which point to aggregation.
- A colour that develops or deepens. The monograph describes the approved solution as clear and colourless to slightly yellow and says not to use it if particles or discolouration appear. A freshly mixed research vial should be clear and colourless.
- Gel or thickening, covered in why peptides gel or go cloudy.
Travelling with tirzepatide
The sealed powder is the form to travel with. A mixed vial travels cold, upright and boxed, with a cold pack that does not touch the glass, since direct contact can freeze the solution. The peptide travel case is built for this. Tirzepatide is supplied as lyophilised vials only; there is no nasal spray version.

Frequently asked questions
How long does tirzepatide last in the fridge after mixing?
Under Vistara Labs’ handling guidance, 8 to 12 weeks at 2 to 8 °C, kept dark, with quality slowly fading from around week 6 to 8.
How long can tirzepatide stay at room temperature?
The approved pen product’s monograph allows its single-dose pens and vials up to 21 days in total at no more than 30 °C. That applies to the manufactured solution; a mixed research vial is kept in the fridge and out only for handling.
Can you freeze tirzepatide?
The dry powder can be stored frozen, at −20 °C for about a year by one supplier’s data sheet. A mixed solution should not be frozen; the monograph says not to use the product if it has been frozen.
Does tirzepatide go bad?
Yes, slowly. In solution it is affected by heat, light and freezing. Lasting cloudiness, particles or a colour change mean the solution has degraded.
How long does tirzepatide last in the body?
The US prescribing information gives an elimination half-life of about 5 to 6 days in people with overweight or obesity.
