PT-141, also known as bremelanotide, is a synthetic heptapeptide from the melanocortin family. It is a metabolite of Melanotan II, and while the two share an origin, PT-141 carries far less of the pigmentation activity Melanotan II is known for and is not studied as a tanning compound.
What separates PT-141 from most compounds studied in this area is where it acts. Rather than working on blood flow, it binds melanocortin receptors in the central nervous system. That central mechanism is what drew researchers to it originally, and it is still what defines the questions asked about it.
Published research on PT-141 has concentrated on the neural pathways involved in arousal and desire, and the compound has been carried through formal human clinical trials under the name bremelanotide. It remains a reference compound in melanocortin receptor research and appears in both male and female models.
