What SS-31 is
SS-31 is a four-residue peptide, D-Arg-Dmt-Lys-Phe-NH2, where Dmt is a modified tyrosine (2′,6′-dimethyltyrosine). It belongs to the Szeto-Schiller family of peptides, named after the researchers who designed them. The alternating pattern of positively charged and aromatic residues lets it cross cell membranes and concentrate in the inner mitochondrial membrane, where it binds cardiolipin, a lipid that the energy-producing machinery of the mitochondria depends on. In the clinic the same molecule is called elamipretide.
What the research covers
SS-31 has a substantial clinical record. As elamipretide, it has been tested in large randomised trials, and in late 2025 it received its first FDA approval, for Barth syndrome, a rare inherited mitochondrial disease. In the long-term extension of the Barth syndrome trial, patients walked about 96 metres farther on the six-minute walk test, and a trial in dry age-related macular degeneration reported a 43% reduction in a key measure of retinal-cell loss. The record is not uniformly positive: some trials, including a large study in primary mitochondrial myopathy, missed their main endpoints. Handling and storage
Keep unopened vials cold and dark. A 10 mg vial reconstituted with 2 mL of bacteriostatic water gives 5 mg/mL; with 1 mL it gives 10 mg/mL.
