What NAD+ is
NAD+ is a small molecule made of two nucleotides joined together. Every cell uses it to carry electrons during energy production, and it is also the fuel for two families of enzymes that researchers care about: the sirtuins, involved in how cells respond to stress, and the PARPs, involved in DNA repair. NAD+ levels fall with age in many tissues, one of the most replicated observations in ageing biology, and that decline is why restoring NAD+ became a serious research field. What the research covers
The strongest human data comes from oral NAD+ precursors, molecules the body converts into NAD+. Multiple randomised trials show that precursors such as nicotinamide riboside reliably raise NAD+ levels in people. In the NICE trial (Nature Communications, 2024), nicotinamide riboside improved six-minute walking distance by 31 metres against placebo in people with peripheral artery disease. Handling and storage
