What Selank is
Selank is a synthetic heptapeptide, Thr-Lys-Pro-Arg-Pro-Gly-Pro. The first four residues are tuftsin, a naturally occurring immune-modulating fragment of immunoglobulin G. The Pro-Gly-Pro tail, the same stabilising extension used in Semax, protects the molecule from rapid enzymatic breakdown. Selank was developed at the Institute of Molecular Genetics of the Russian Academy of Sciences and is used clinically in Russia as a nasal solution.
What the research covers
Selank’s human record rests mainly on Russian clinical studies. In a 2015 study of 70 patients with anxiety disorders, adding Selank to the benzodiazepine phenazepam brought the anti-anxiety effect on sooner and reduced the tranquilliser’s side effects, including memory and attention problems and sedation. A separate 2008 study found shifts in immune-system cytokine markers in patients with generalised anxiety.
