Ipamorelin is a synthetic pentapeptide, which is to say it is built from a chain of just five amino acids. It belongs to a family of compounds called growth hormone secretagogues, studied for the way they act on the ghrelin receptor in the pituitary gland to prompt the body's own release of growth hormone rather than supplying the hormone itself.
What made Ipamorelin one of the most widely studied peptides in that family is how narrow its effect is. Earlier secretagogues tended to move several hormones at once in laboratory models, while published work on Ipamorelin reports a much more selective response, with little accompanying movement in cortisol or prolactin. That selectivity is the reason it is so often chosen as a research tool.
Research involving Ipamorelin usually looks at the natural pulsatile pattern of growth hormone release and the markers associated with it, including body composition, lean tissue, sleep architecture, connective tissue repair, and recovery following physical stress.
Ipamorelin is frequently studied next to CJC-1295, a growth hormone releasing hormone analogue, because the two act on different receptors within the same axis. That pairing is the reason the combination is so common in the literature.
