Description
Epitalon, also written Epithalon, is a synthetic tetrapeptide built from four amino acids: alanine, glutamic acid, aspartic acid and glycine. It was modelled on epithalamin, a peptide extract of the pineal gland first studied in the Soviet Union in 1973.
Epitalon is best known in research for its connection to telomerase, the enzyme that maintains the telomeres capping the ends of chromosomes. Telomere length is one of the most closely watched markers in the biology of cellular ageing, which is why a compound associated with telomerase activity attracts the attention it does in longevity work.
Beyond telomeres, Epitalon is studied for its relationship with the pineal gland and the regulation of melatonin, which places it in research on circadian rhythm and sleep patterns. It also appears in work on antioxidant defence and DNA repair.
With that focus on telomerase, circadian regulation and cellular maintenance, Epitalon has become one of the most frequently referenced peptides in longevity and healthy ageing research.
