What is Ipamorelin?
Ipamorelin is a synthetic peptide only five amino acids long, derived from a series of compounds that remove the two central residues of GHRP-1, an earlier growth hormone releasing peptide. It acts on the ghrelin receptor, GHS-R1a, in the pituitary, prompting the gland to release its own growth hormone rather than supplying any hormone directly.
Its reputation rests on selectivity. Older relatives such as GHRP-6 and GHRP-2 pushed up the stress-hormone pair along with growth hormone, while Ipamorelin did not. Laboratory work has since followed several further threads:
- Bone. Faster longitudinal bone growth and higher bone mineral content were reported in laboratory studies.
- Glucocorticoid models. In one model, Ipamorelin counteracted the loss of muscle strength and bone formation that a glucocorticoid produced on its own.
- Gut motility. In a model of postoperative ileus, it shortened the time before gut transit restarted after surgery.
Why are tesamorelin and Ipamorelin studied together?
Because they are not two versions of the same lever. Tesamorelin belongs with the GHRH analogues, the group that also includes sermorelin and CJC-1295. Ipamorelin belongs with the growth hormone secretagogues, which work through the ghrelin receptor instead.
