How Long Does KPV Last? Storage Before and After Mixing
Lyophilised KPV keeps at 2 to 8 °C for the weeks a vial is in use and at minus 20 °C for months. Mixed with bacteriostatic water, it lasts 8 to 12 weeks in the fridge under Vistara Labs’ handling guidance, with quality slowly fading from around week 6 to 8. A mixed vial is kept dark, upright and unfrozen. KPV is only three amino acids long, which removes most of the usual ways a peptide degrades but leaves one that is specific to its Lys-Pro start.
Findings
- KPV is the tripeptide lysine-proline-valine, studied for anti-inflammatory activity and taken up by the PepT1 transporter in intestinal cells (2008).
- Its three residues include no methionine, cysteine, asparagine or glutamine, so oxidation and deamidation, the commonest slow reactions in mixed vials, have nothing to act on.
- Peptides that start with an amino acid followed by proline can cyclise and split off a diketopiperazine, in solution or in the solid state; with lysine first, this ran fourth-fastest of ten model peptides under heat (2022).
- Shorter chains were more stable against this reaction than longer ones in related model work (2021). No KPV-specific stability study has been published.
What is KPV, chemically?
KPV is a tripeptide, Lys-Pro-Val, with anti-inflammatory properties in cell and mouse colitis models; a 2008 study showed it enters intestinal epithelial and immune cells through PepT1, the transporter for di- and tripeptides (Dalmasso et al., Gastroenterology, 2008). It corresponds to the last three amino acids of alpha-MSH, covered in how KPV comes from alpha-MSH.
For storage, size is the main story. A longer peptide offers many residues that can react with water or oxygen. KPV’s lysine, proline and valine carry no sulfur to oxidise and no amide side chain to deamidate, the two reactions that most often limit how long a mixed vial lasts.
The one reaction KPV is built for
A proline in second position creates a specific risk. In a peptide that begins Xaa-Pro, the first peptide bond can flip into its cis form, letting the N-terminal amine attack the bond after proline. The first two residues leave as a ring, a diketopiperazine, and the rest of the chain is cut off (Zhang et al., J Phys Chem B, 2021). A 2022 study described this as an important degradation pathway that can occur during synthesis and storage, in solution or in the solid state. Testing ten model peptides of the form Xaa-Pro-Gly-Gly-Gly-Gly-Lys, it found charged or polar first residues reacted faster: with lysine first, the half-life at 75 °C was 53 minutes, fourth-fastest of the ten, against 276 minutes for glycine (Zhang et al., J Am Soc Mass Spectrom, 2022).
KPV is exactly that shape: lysine, then proline. If the reaction ran, it would leave a lysine-proline ring and free valine. The 2022 data came from 65 to 75 °C in ethanol with acetic acid, not from a cold water-based vial, and the 2021 work found the shortest chains in its series more stable than the longer ones, so the numbers do not translate into a shelf life. What they do show is that heat drives this reaction strongly, which is the clearest compound-specific reason KPV is kept cold. With no published stability study for KPV itself, the fridge window is the general peptide guidance.
How long does KPV powder last?
As a dry cake KPV has little water for any reaction to use. Sealed, it keeps at 2 to 8 °C for the weeks a vial is in use and at minus 20 °C for months, in its box. A cold vial warms to room temperature before the stopper is pierced, so condensation does not reach the powder. A few days at ambient temperature in transit do not harm it.
How long does KPV last after mixing?
| Condition | KPV |
|---|---|
| Lyophilised, sealed, 2 to 8 °C | The weeks the vial is in use |
| Lyophilised, sealed, minus 20 °C | Months |
| Mixed with bacteriostatic water, 2 to 8 °C | 8 to 12 weeks, fading from around week 6 to 8 |
| Mixed, room temperature | Not stored this way |
| Mixed, frozen for repeat access | No; single-use aliquots frozen once only |

How can you tell KPV has degraded?
Mixed KPV is clear and colourless, and both possible breakdown products, the lysine-proline ring and free valine, are small and colourless too. Loss of strength is therefore invisible, and the mixing date and temperature history are the real record. Discard the solution if it shows:
- Haze or cloudiness that does not clear within 10 to 15 minutes of mixing.
- Particles, strands or film.
- A yellow tint.
- Time out of the fridge or a freeze-thaw cycle.

Travelling with KPV
Sealed vials handle a few days at ambient temperature, away from heat. A mixed vial needs to stay cold, given how strongly heat speeds the reaction above; the peptide travel case is made for that. Orders ship from within Canada by Canada Post Xpresspost.
What about the KPV nasal spray?
The KPV Nasal Spray comes ready-mixed in a sealed metered pump (0.175 mL per press), in two bottle sizes. As a solution it is stored upright in the fridge, like a mixed vial. See how to store a peptide nasal spray.
Vistara Labs supplies KPV and bacteriostatic water as laboratory research materials. The windows on this page describe how long the material stays in good condition; they are not instructions for any other use.
Frequently asked questions
How long does KPV last in the fridge?
Mixed with bacteriostatic water and kept at 2 to 8 °C in the dark, KPV lasts 8 to 12 weeks under Vistara Labs’ handling guidance, with quality slowly fading from around week 6 to 8. Sealed powder keeps in the fridge for the weeks it is in use.
How long does KPV last at room temperature?
Sealed lyophilised KPV tolerates a few days at room temperature, such as shipping. A mixed vial is not stored warm, because heat speeds the diketopiperazine reaction its Lys-Pro start is prone to.
Can you freeze KPV?
Sealed powder can be held at minus 20 °C for months. A mixed vial that will be opened again is not frozen; laboratories that need long holding freeze single-use aliquots once.
Does KPV go bad?
Slowly. It has none of the residues that oxidise or deamidate, but peptides beginning with an amino acid followed by proline can split into a diketopiperazine ring, faster when warm. Cloudiness, particles or a tint mean the solution is discarded.
Is KPV more stable than longer peptides?
In most respects, yes: its three residues include none that oxidise or deamidate. Its specific weak point is the Lys-Pro start, which is why it is still kept cold.
