How Long Does Oxytocin Last? Storage Before and After Mixing

Sealed lyophilised oxytocin keeps best cold and dark, and once mixed with bacteriostatic water it lasts 8 to 12 weeks at 2 to 8 °C, with quality slowly fading from around week 6 to 8. Oxytocin has unusually good heat-stability data, because it is an essential medicine shipped to hot climates: approved oxytocin injection is kept in the cold chain at 2 to 8 °C, loses content steadily at 30 °C and above, and is most stable in mildly acidic solution. A mixed vial is never frozen and is kept dark. The ready-mixed Oxytocin Nasal Spray is kept in the fridge, as approved oxytocin nasal spray is.

Findings

  • WHO and UNICEF recommend cold-chain storage at 2 to 8 °C for all oxytocin products because the injection is susceptible to heat.
  • In a 2019 study of injection ampoules, content showed no significant loss at 2 to 8 °C, fell from 102% to 96% over 120 days at 30 °C, and dropped below 90% within 120 days at 40 °C.
  • Oxytocin degrades slowest at pH 4.5 and fastest at pH 9.0, with a half-life of about 115 days at 40 °C in the most stable formulation (2009).
  • An approved oxytocin nasal spray is labelled for refrigeration and is valid for 1 month after opening, kept refrigerated.

How long does lyophilised oxytocin last?

Freeze-drying removes the water that oxytocin’s breakdown reactions need, so the sealed vial is the durable form. Keep it at 2 to 8 °C, or frozen for long-term storage, in its box. A cold vial warms to room temperature before it is opened, so condensation does not wet the cake. Short periods at room temperature in transit are not a concern for the powder; the injection studies below show that even a dissolved, formulated product holds up for months at 25 °C. General rules are in how to store peptides.

How long does oxytocin last after mixing?

Under Vistara Labs’ handling guidance, mixed oxytocin lasts 8 to 12 weeks at 2 to 8 °C, kept upright, in the dark and opened only through a swabbed stopper, as listed in how long peptides last after mixing. The approved literature supports keeping it cold: in the 2019 ampoule study, periods at 2 to 8 °C produced no significant loss, and moving ampoules back into the fridge stopped further degradation (Nguyen et al., BMJ Open, 2019). The oxytocin reconstitution page has the calculator for water volume and concentration.

What does heat do to oxytocin?

Oxytocin is nine amino acids with a ring closed by a disulfide bridge between two cysteines, and that bridge is where much of the damage happens. A 2009 study held oxytocin at pH 2.0, 4.5, 7.0 and 9.0 at 40 to 80 °C. Breakdown was fastest at pH 9.0, then 7.0, then 2.0, and slowest at 4.5. At pH 4.5 and above, the main products were oxytocin with extra sulfur atoms in the bridge (trisulfides and tetrasulfides), dimers linked by disulfide or dityrosine bonds, and larger aggregates; at pH 2.0, deamidation dominated (Hawe et al., Pharm Res, 2009). Quality matters as much as temperature: in a 2020 study of oxytocin brands bought in Malawi and Rwanda, products from strictly regulated or WHO-prequalified makers kept 97.4% to 109.3% of their declared content after 6 months at 30 °C, while two brands labelled for non-refrigerated storage did worse, not better (Hagen et al., Am J Trop Med Hyg, 2020). Certificates of analysis for our oxytocin are on the lab reports page.

How can you tell mixed oxytocin has degraded?

Mixed oxytocin is a clear, colourless solution. Discard it, whatever the date, if it turns cloudy and stays cloudy, shows particles or strands, or changes colour. Most of the losses in the studies above were measured by HPLC and would not have been visible: a solution can look perfect and still be short of oxytocin. For this compound in particular, temperature history and the mixing date are better guides than appearance. See why peptides gel or go cloudy.

Travelling with oxytocin

Every order ships from within Canada by Canada Post Xpresspost, and sealed lyophilised vials travel without refrigeration. A mixed vial or spray that leaves the fridge goes in an insulated bag with a cold pack, wrapped so it cannot freeze, and returns to the fridge on arrival. The injection data show sustained heat does real damage: weeks at 40 °C, a temperature a parked car in summer passes easily.

Oxytocin nasal spray storage

The Oxytocin Nasal Spray comes ready-mixed in a sealed metered pump that delivers 0.175 mL per press, in 2 mg, 4 mg and 10 mg bottles; the 2 mg bottle holds 400 mcg per mL. It is kept at 2 to 8 °C, upright, capped and out of light, and never frozen. Approved practice points the same way: an oxytocin nasal spray registered in Brazil is labelled for storage between 2 and 8 °C and is valid for 1 month after opening, kept refrigerated (product leaflet). The spray and vial formats are compared in oxytocin nasal spray vs injection, and the spray is part of the Libido Spray Stack. Handling and priming are in how to store a peptide nasal spray, and presses per bottle in how many sprays are in a peptide nasal spray.

Vistara Labs supplies oxytocin as a laboratory research material. The approved products above are described only for their storage and stability data; the windows on this page are not instructions for any other use.

Frequently asked questions

How long does oxytocin last in the fridge?

Mixed with bacteriostatic water, oxytocin lasts 8 to 12 weeks at 2 to 8 °C under Vistara Labs’ handling guidance, with quality fading from around week 6 to 8. Studies of oxytocin injection found no significant loss at 2 to 8 °C.

How long does oxytocin last at room temperature?

In a 2019 study, oxytocin injection ampoules fell from 102% to 96% of labelled content over 120 days at 30 °C, and below 90% within 120 days at 40 °C. A mixed research vial is kept in the fridge.

Can you freeze oxytocin?

The sealed lyophilised vial can be frozen for long-term storage. A mixed vial or spray should not be frozen, because freeze-thaw cycles damage peptides in solution.

Does oxytocin go bad?

Yes. Heat drives the formation of trisulfide and tetrasulfide forms, dimers and aggregates, most of which are invisible. Cloudiness, particles or colour change mean it should be discarded.

How long does oxytocin nasal spray last once opened?

An approved oxytocin nasal spray registered in Brazil is labelled valid for 1 month after opening, kept refrigerated. The Vistara Labs spray is kept at 2 to 8 °C, upright, capped and out of light.
